Plumbing, drainlaying and gasfitting are skilled trades that require rigorous training and certification. In New Zealand, there are four or more levels of certification, each representing a different level of qualification and responsibility:
Certifying - The highest qualification, where the person is fully qualified and registered. It takes at least 6 years of training and study. They are responsible for both their own work and that of anyone they supervise.
Tradesman - Qualified and registered and usually work independently. However, a certifying tradesperson (supervisor), is ultimately responsible for ensuring that the work is done competently.
Restricted - Qualified with a trade certificate but not yet certified. They are registered and authorized to do the work under supervision.
Limited Certificate/Trainee - In training and working under supervision of a certifying person who is ultimately responsible for ensuring the work is done competently.
